  • Battle of Philipi

    This battle was the first of th civil war and was barely anything. This was minor affair with no fatalities and lasted less than 20 minutes. June 3, 1861 would've been a footnote if this wasn't th first battle. It also was an important step on George B. McClellan’s road to becoming commander of the Army of the Potomac, the largest Union army.
    Philippi, a town of less than 500, held little military significance. The real prize was Grafton, some 25 miles north.
  • Battle of big bethel

    On June 10th, 1861, the Battle of Big Bethel begun. Compared to most Civil War battles, Big Bethel was nothing. This battle took place in Hampton and York county along with Virginia. The Confederates went home with a victory but, with 53 wounded and 18 killed. The Union only had 1 killed and only 7 wounded.
  • The Battel of Port Royal

    The location of this battle is pretty self explanatory, but it was located at Port Royal Sound, South Carolina. This battle was on November 3 lasting until the 7th of 1861. The generals and commanders were, Samuel F. Du Pont , Confederate: Thomas F. Drayton. The outcome was a Union victory. The union had 31 casualties, while the confederates had 63. This battle happened four days after the battle of Fort Sumter.
  • Battle of Belmont

    This battle took place in Mississippi County, Missouri on November 7 of 1861. The union general was Ulysses S Grant and the Confederate General was Gideon. J Pillow. There were 3,100 Union soldiers engaged and 5000 Confederate soldiers engaged in this battle. The outcome of this battle was actually inconclusive so we do not know who had the victory. There were 600 Union casualties 600 Confederate as well.
