  • Missouri Compromise

    Ths banned slavery in the Lousiana territory except in Missouri. This satisfied this satisfied the North and the South. The North still had the rest of the Lousiana territory as free and the South had Missouri as a slave state. This was bassically the start of the disagreements between the north and south
  • Wilmot Proviso

    This would ban slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico. It passed in the House but failed in the senate. This made the south even madder because it showed that more states were anti-slavery
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    This act required that all escaped slaves that were found had to be returned to their owners.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Texas surrendered its claim to New Mexico, and claims north of the Missouri Compromise Line,
    California's application for admission as a free state with its current boundaries was approved.
    The South prevented adoption of the Wilmot Proviso that would have outlawed slavery in the new territories
  • Henry Clay

    Former member and speaker of the House of Representatives. Also was a former Secretary of State. He was instrumental in formulating the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850. He was viewed as the primary representative of Western interests in this group
  • Stephen A. Douglas

    A politician from Illinois who designed the Kansas-Nebraska act. This act allowed people to find out through popular sovereignty whether they should allow slavery in each territory
  • Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th-century slaves of African descent in the United States to escape to free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause. Many free states ignored the laws that required them to return the escaped slaves which pissed the south off even more
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    An anti-slavery novel published in 1852. According to some, it helped lay the groundwork for the civil war. This book helped people picture how horrible slavery was. This book is what really got people against slavery.
