    John Wikes Booth, an actor and supporter of the confederacy, shot Lincoln ar Ford's theater in Washington, D.C. This was five days after Robert E. Lee surrendered at the Appomattox Courthouse. The president was wounded and carried to a lodging house on the opposite side of the theater. The next morning Lincoln at 56 died at 7:22 a.m.
