Lincoln becomes president
Lincoln was the 16th president of the US. He was up for the task to try and join the nation as one again once the war started. Lincoln was the man on top through the war..very popular. LIncoln was assainated in April 1865. THis is important since he was kind of the over look through the war. -
South Carolina Secedes
South Carolina is the first state to act as news of Lincoln getting elected. South Carolina plans an event to secede from the Union. This event is important because it was a hge part in starting the civil war. Once South Carolina acted so did many other states in a short period of time causing the war to start. -
Confederacy formed
7 states from the south seperate from the Union. They write their own constituiton and want a new nation formed. This is important because this was the other side of the war and without them the north wouldnt have any reason to fight or anyone to fiight against. The war wouldn't have been a war if the 7 states didnt seperate. -
Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was in the Charleston Harbor, South Carolina..Union Maj. Robert Anderson held the fort until Beauregard of the Confederate army made him surrender,and through the little battle no souldieirs were killed. Fort Sumter was a big fort and help for the Union, but now it was in Confederate hands. Important because it helped confederates. -
Bull Run
First major land battle in Virginia. There was 4,787 deaths during this battle. this battle is omportant because it is where Thomas J. Jackson got his nickname, "Stonewall." -
Donelson
Grant moves on to Donelson after capturing Fort Henry. This battle was a major victiory for Grant and the Union, but a major mistake and problem for the south. Unconditional and immediate surrender demanded by Grant. -
Shiloh
Grant over comes a huge battle with a very small unit of soldiers. Was the bloodiest battle in American history at this time. There were about 23 thousand casualties. This battle is important because the Union fought hard against odds and helped them last longer. -
Antietam
One of the first battles to take place on Union dirt. It was know to be the bloodiest single day batle with 22 thousand deaths. This battle is important because it was a bloody one. Union Victory -
Fredericksburg
Ended 15, 1862. The Civil War's first urban combat and major oppsed river crossing. Close to 200,000 soldiers fought in the battle. This battle is important because it was one of the deadliest with 9,000 killed. Robert E.Lee once again lead the cnfederates to a victory. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Lincoln signs and announces EP letting all slaves in rebelling states to be set free. Even though the law was set some states and/or slave owners did not obey. This is an important event because it was a huge event and retaliation was on. Slavery was the main goal and was getting closer to be noticed. -
Chancellorsville
The principal engagement of chancellorsville campain was fought for. The confederates won the battle. This batlle is important because it was a mjor battle. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The battle of Gettysburg was in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania from JUly 1-3, 1863. This battle is important because it was the largest battle ever fought. General George G Meade lead the Union to a victory over the Confederates led by General Lee. -
Battle of Chickamauga
The battle of Chickamagua , Georgia was held at the river with Maj. Gen. Braxton Bragg's leading the confederates to a win, but the win was staggering. This battle was important beause it helped the confederates keep the Union's supply line from getting to them. -
Petersburg
June 15-18. 108,00 confederate and Union soldiers faught tocontrol the improtant transportation hub. The Union was hoping that they could force Lee out and force them to also leave richmond. The confederate won. This battle is important because it was an important battle to keep the transportation hub. -
Lee surrenders
Lee and Grant meet at the Appomattox Court house in Virginia. Lee surrenders to grant. The CIVIL WAR is OVER. This is important because it is what actually ended the war lol.
