Union armies cut off the Confederate retreat to the Appomattox Courthouse. Robert E Lee tried to break through. He didn't have the power he surrendered. He signed the surrender documents in Wilmer McLeans house that afternoon. On the 12th of April they have a formal ceremony to end the war in Virginia. sends a message signaling many surrenders throughout the south. This leads to the end of the war.
