  • Lincoln Elected

    The first republican president. Significant because of his views on slavery. His election caused South Carolina to secede.
  • South Carolina secedes

    first to secede. caused others to follow to join confederacy. Prompted the Civil War.
  • Confederate States formed

    Jefferson Davis elected president of Confederacy. Significant civil split. Other states join the Confederacy.
  • Fort Sumter

    Civil War begins. Confederate Victory. Makes the Union realize that the South is strong too and the war will last much longer than thoguht.
  • President Lincoln issues Proclamation

    Proclamation calling for militiamen, and summons a special session of Congress for July 4.
  • Virginia secedes.

    followed by Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Confederacy population and army grows.
  • Lincoln's blockade proclamation

    Proclamation of Blockade against Southern ports. blockade limits the ability of South to stay supplied in the war, while the Norht remains industrialized and well supplied.
  • Bull Run

    Union defeat, signifies that the war will last much longer than anticipated.
  • Naval Battle

    First ironclad ships
    Myromac v. Moniter
    Establishes the Union/US as a very strong naval force, to this day we are still the most powerful
  • Battle of Antietem

    bloodiest day in the civil war,
    turning point and also signifies the intensity of the war
  • Emancipation proclamation

    Freed slaves in the south, but they did not feel like they had to listen since they were considered soverign. Lincoln did not emancipate slaves everywhere because that would ruin the realtionships with the border states.
  • Vicksburg

    Mississippi River, Union victory, split the south geographically, which made confederate war plans difficult to coordinate
  • Gettysburg

    Union victory with most casualties, was referred to as a turning point in the war since the Union was able to defeat Lee, which ended the invasion of the confederacy into the union.
  • Union burned everything from Atlanta to North

    Union burned everything in their path when invading confederacy n order to prevernt the south from being able to fight back.
    Significant because after the war, much reconstruction was needed in the South.
  • End of War

    End of Civil War with Union Victory, begins the reconstruction process. Lincoln is president.
  • Lincoln Assassinated

    At Ford's theater. Reconstruction slows after he is assasinated.
    Andres Johnson takes the presidential role as he is elected and continues reconstruction.
  • Lee Surrenders

    Union victory at Appomattox Court House, which caused LEe to surrender his army. This set the stage for the end of the Civil War and treaties.
  • 13th Amendment ratified

    Freed slaves and abolished slavery entirely throughout the US. Reconstruction Amendment.
  • 14th Amendnent

    The 14th amendment is adopted and allows all slaves citizenship and rights of a citizen.Reconstruction Amendment.
  • 15th Amendment passed

    Universal men's suffrage. All males are allowed to vote, even slaves and even those who do not own land.Reconstruction Amendment.
