    The supreme court rules on Brown .v. BOE that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional.
  • Emmett Till

    Emmett was visiting family in Mississippi when he was kidnapped, shot, and killed for allegedly whistling at a white woman. (he was 14)
  • Sit in

    Four colored students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College begin a sit in at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter and refused to leave.
  • James Meredith

    James becomes the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi. There was violence and riots which caused President Kennedy to send 5,000 troops.
  • Martin arrested

    Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested and jailed during anti-segregation protests in Birmingham.
  • March on Washington

    Over 200,000 people join the "March on Washington" Which was held at the Lincoln memorial where Martin Luther gave his "I have a Dream" speech.
  • 24th Amendment

    The 24th Amendment is passed which abolishes the poll tax.
  • Civil Rights Act

    President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits discrimination of all kinds based on race.
  • Malcolm X

    Malcolm was shot to death while speaking at a rally.
  • March to Montgomery

    Blacks begin to march to Montgomery in support of voting rights, but were stopped at the Pettus Bridge by police blockades
  • Interracial Marriage

    Loving .v. Virginia the supreme court rules that prohibiting interracial marriage is unconstitutional.
  • Martin shot..

    Martin at the age of 39 was shot to death while he was standing on a balcony outside his hotel room.
