  • Diem Bien Phu

    This battle lead to the withdraw of the French and eventually would lead to the Vietnam War
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Supreme Court ruled unanimously that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional and violated the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.
  • Geneva Accords

    After the withdraw of the French, negotiations were held and these accords were decided upon, which said that Vietnam was to be divided along the 17th parallel.
  • The Montgomery Bus Boycott

    This was a successful boycott to negotiate with city leaders for an end to segregation after the incident with Rosa Parks. Also the person who was elected to lead this was none other than the 26-year-old Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Russia launches Sputnik

    Russians launch first artificial satellite into Earth's orbit.
  • The sit-in in Greensboro

    When four friends were denied service at a store, they refused to leave. This sparked many other African Americans to do the same at the same store.
  • France's Nukes

    France successfully tests it's first nuclear weapon.
  • The March on Washington

    Dr. King and more than 200,000 demonstrators of all races flocked to the nation's capital and tried to help build momentum for the passing of the Civil Rights Act.
  • Overthrow of Diem

    Along with the help of Henry Cabot Lodge (the American ambassador), several Vietnamese generals overthrew and executed Diem.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964 Enacted

    Outlawed major forms of descrimination against blacks and women, including segregation. This act was passed July 2.

    This authorized the president to "take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression."

    Malcolm X was assassintaed.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    The Voting Rights Act was passed, which authorized the US attorney general to send federal examiners to qualified voters for registration and suspended discriminatory devices, such as literacy tests.

    Revolution in the People's Republic of China that aimed to restore capitalism.
  • The Tet Offensive

    American forces took heavy attack on this date when guerrilla fighters attacked most American airbases in South Vietnam and most of the South's major cities.
  • Johnson Decides Not to Run
