  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Court case that established the "separate but equal" doctrine. Segregation of African Americans was allowed as long as equal facilities were provided. Usually the facilities for African Americans were of lower quality.
  • Norris v. Alabama

    The Supreme Court ruled that not allowed African Americans on juries violated their rights to equal protection.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    A young black girl named Linda Brown was denied from attending her neighborhood school. Her family sued the school board of Topeka. The court ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.
  • Southern Manifesto

    Southern resistance for desegregation laws was common. Southern members of Congress signed the "Southern Manifesto" that denounced the Supreme Court's "abuse of judicial power". Southerners really did not like desegregation laws.
  • SCLC

    Dr. King and other African American Ministers established the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which set out to eliminate segregation for good, and encourage African Americans to vote.
  • Public Schools Desegregate

    Eventually, after many trials, the Supreme Court finally orders all school systems to desegregate at once, operating as integrated schools.
