Woman and children start to evacuate Leningrad
This is when Lev and his mother argue because his mom wants him to flee Leningrad with her and his sister but Lev wants to fight for his country. -
Evacuation of civilians is stopped by the German attacks on railroads and other exits.
Later on in the book, Lev thinks about leaving but can't due to German attacks. Lev and Kolya have to sneak past enemy lines to find the eggs. -
Dmitri Shostakovich gives radio address to citizens of Leningrad. "We shall stand up all together and defend our city".
Lev listens to this on his only radio. -
Hitler's speech in Munich: "Leningrad must die of starvation."
Hitler was so cruel that he killed some dogs and lined their dead bodies up in random places. Lev and Kolya see some while trying to find 12 eggs. -
Siege of Leningrad
Lev and Kolya are in Leningrad during this time. This event was significant because all of the people that lived here almost starved to death. It was also significant because the siege was a failure. -
Adults are only allowed a ration of 500 grams of bread a day.
Lev and Kolya are starving so much that they buy a library bar. A library bar is a bunch of book sheets melted into a shape of a candy bar. They tasted bad but they had protein in them, which is something that Leningrad citizens couldn't get enough of. -
Siege of Leningrad ends.
Lev and Sonya celebrate. Later, they become a married couple. -
People start to return to Leningrad to see many buildings have been destroyed.
Lev returns and sees that the apartment building that he lived in has been destroyed. That building was nick-named Kirov. -
People in Leningrad start to rebuild hospitals, factories, schools, and airports.
At the end of the book, Kolya is taken to a hospital that has just been built. He had to go to the hospital because he was shot.
