Citizenship defined through Supreme Court cases

  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

Question of the case was whether Scott was a slave or free, but it upheld slavery in United States territories, denied the legality of black citizenship in America, and declared the Missouri Compromise to be unconstitutional. Scott and Harriett have spent several years living in free territory, born and raised in the US, yet that did not matter. His ancestors were "brought into this country and sold as slaves,” as John Sanford argued.
