Gregory was born in Rome around 540 to his father Gordianus and mother Silvia.
His father was a wealthy patrician who owned large estates in Sicily and a mansion in Rome.
His mother was honored as a saint, but other than that very little is known about her life. -
Apparently Gregory's mind and memory were exceptionally receptive because he was so skillful, he was thought to be second to none in all of Rome.
It appears he went through a course of legal studies and if you accompany that with the religious atmosphere of his home, you could point him out naturally as someone who could have a public career.
