Children's Language Milestones

  • A baby is born.

    At birth a baby has the ability to cry, which is a sound that has no controlled communicative power.
  • Three Months Old

    The first vocal responses when spoken to begin.
  • Eight Months Old

    The child begins gesturing as a way to communicate what they want or need.
  • 12 Months Old

    This is when the first words are spoken replacing previous gestures.
  • 18 Months old

    The rules of language begin to form in the toddler's utterances.
  • Two Years Old

    The toddler begins using bound morphemes in one to two word utterances.
  • Three Years Old

    The toddler uses more adult like langauges with utterances being three or more words on average.
  • Four Year Old

    This is the beginning of conversational speaking.
  • Five Years Old

    The child has learned most of the language form in which they were raised.
  • Six Years Old

    This age ushers in reading and writing as communication forms.
  • Period: to

    Adolescence

    This is the point at which conversation participation is complete, they are able to tell narratives, knows more than one meaning to a word including figurative language, and uses gender syle when talking.
