After the Civil War, Charley survives in the novel. He bgins to take picnics. On these picnics, he admires all of the pretyty things like meadows and creeks. He thinks about shooting himself, too. In real lfe, Charley dies in December of 1867.

After the war is over, Charley goe =s on picnics. At the picnics, he has a sack that has a confederate revolver in it. He wants to kill himself with it because he as so sure he was going to die by one in battle anyway. It's also doesn't feel like suicide since he was going to die by one anyway.
