Charley gets paid 33 dollars in gold coins. He keeps 4 dollars and sends the rest back home for his mother and brother. The Union got a new general, General George McClellan. The troops start to farm. The meaning of "farming" in this case is stealing other peoples food to eat.

Getting shot in the shoulder is painful. When Charley goes to see the surgeon, he notices a pile of amputated arms and legs. He had to stack up dead bodies to block the cold wind

The regiment stayed camped on the field after battle and until burial duty.

They marched to capture the town of Fredericksville. The regiment went in the night and the next day battle began.

On the 3rd they crossed the Rappahannock River into Fredericksburg where they shelled and returned to the north bank. They marchd into Uniontown, PA and were attacked by J.E.B. Stuarts cavalry at Haymarket.
