    Sketches by Boz

    Using the pen-name of 'Boz', Dickens began contributing short stories to the Morning Chronicle and the London Evening Chronicle. These stories were so popular that they were collected together and published as a book called "Sketches by Boz."

    Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist

    Dickens's first issue of Pickwick Papers was published on March 1836 which ended on November 1837. In 1836, he became the editor of Bentley's Miscellany. In 1837, he began writing Oliver Twist which ended in April 1839. Oliver Twist was the start of Dickens more serious novels. Dickens used the book to show how bad the situation is for a lot of people living in England at the time and also take some shots at the judicial system. Even though it was well received, it caused a huge controversy.

    Other Projects

    On February 1839, Dickens began writing s serial novel about the miserable conditions in schools for poor children called Nicholas Nickleby which finished in October. In that same year, he also resigned as an editor of Bentley's Miscellany and began writing for the Master Humphrey's Clock.The Old Curiosity Shop which finished in February 1841 is remembered for Little Nell's death. After that, he began Barnaby Rudge and it's a historical novel about the anti-Catholic Gordon Riot of 1780.

    Visit To America & Italy
    In 1842 Dickens traveled to America because he was curious of their civilization and thought it was going to be fantastic. But it was the opposite that. He discovered that America is a land ruled by money, partly built on slavery,and has a corrupt press and unsavoury manners. That is why he decided to write a travelogue about his experience in America. This is one of his travel books and the other one being Pictures from Italy.

    More Christmas Books

    Knowing that A Christmas Carol was a hit, Dickens decided to write more Christmas books. The Chimes,published in 1844, is a more serious book than A Chrimstas Carol and focuses more on social problems of London. The next book being The Cricket on the Hearth (1845) which has a lighter tone. The Battle of Life (1846) is still about change of heart but now with supernatural things. And The Haunted Man (1848) goes back to A Christmas Carol with people visiting the villain guy and changing him.

    Dickens began writing Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son and this is considered one of his more serious works. It's a realistic novel of human life in a society where businesses/wealth can affect someone. It's this book that Dickens' reputation as a world class author was established.

    Through 1849-1850, David Copperfield was published. This novel is the most autobiographical book of Dickens and focuses on his childhood, reporter life, love life, and many more. In 1850, he began to edit a new periodical,Household Words which covers from politics to family life, etc. He stopped in 1859 and began to edit for All The Year Round.

    Darker Novels

    After the death of his father, Dickens started to write novels which are considered to be "darker." The first novel being Bleak House (1852-1853) which takes his observations from being a reporter and illustrates the evils caused by long, drawn-out suits in the Courts of Chancery. The next novel Hard Times (1854), is about how people value facts and actions more than people's feelings. Another dark novel is Little Dorrit (1855-1857) and it's about his memories from his dad's imprisonments.

  • Perfoming with Wilkie Collins

    Perfoming with Wilkie Collins
    In 1586, he collaborated with Wilkie Collins on a play, The Frozen Deep with this theatrical company. This close association with the theater had an important impact on Dickens the author. Dickens use his theatrical skills to describe his characters in such a visual way that they are easily seen as a real life character.

    Dickens's novel, A Tale of Two Cities was published in 1859 and ened in November in his own publication All The Year Round. It caused a huge controversy at the time. Dickens used lots of contradictory statements when he was describing the time of the French Revolution. This was mainly to explain the uncertainty of the time, and also the differences between the aristocracy and the lower class during this time.

    Dickens completed Our Mutual Friend, his last finished novel before he died and it describes the effect that money and greed brings. He began to write The Mystery of Edwin Drood but was only able to finished half of it before he died on June, 9, 1870 by a stroke.
