Charles Darwin - Bennett PHIL202

  • Darwin Born

Born into a family of physicians (father and grandfather.)
  • The Voyage of the Beagle

Captain Robert Fitz-Roy invited Darwin to be a naturalist for the Beagle during their 2-year voyage, which later turned out to last 5 years. He didn't know it at the time; however, this voyage was the start of his scientific revolution leading to the theory of evolution. During this time, he discovered various fossils, geological evidence and varying animal species which sparked his curiosities and fueled his research.
  • Fossil Discovery

While exploring the Bahia Blanca along the coast of Argentina, Darwin discovered bones of fossil mammals at two locations. He noticed what seemed to be the outer shell of an extinct form of armadillo and the bones of extinct giant ground sloths. This posed the question of why would fossil remains and modern species found on the same continent resemble each other so closely? This was the spark that ignited the flame of evolutionary theory led by Charles Darwin himself.
  • Journal Publication

After returning from his voyage in October of 1836, Darwin began distributing his specimens among specialists and passing his personal journal to relatives for review and advise. This resulted in Darwin authoring three separate volumes to his journal to be published. Before he could get the last volume to the publisher, Capt. Fitz-Roy caught wind and ceased publication in order to review and alter the works. Fitz-Roy had the rights to do so on the grounds that it was, after all, his ship.
  • Origin of Species

On the Origin of Species is a publication authored by Darwin which is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. This book was intended for a generalized audience and gained much attention. Seeing as he was a distinguished scientist, his findings were taken seriously and the evidence he presented generated scientific, philosophical, and religious discussion
  • Death of Darwin
