The HMS Beagle was a scientific expedition and spent a lot of time in South America and the Galapagos Islands in the South Pacific. Darwin Publishes On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
Darwin theorized that species survived through a process called "natural selection", where, in an environment of constant change and challenge, only the species that were able to adapt to their surroundings would survive. Those species that could not, died off or went extinct (Biography.com, 2019). Most of his research was conducted on birds, plants, and fossils, Darwin notices similar characteristics between other species all around the world (Biography.com, 2019).
