    Charles Cummings was the first Lieutenant of the 11th Vermont Regiment before he joined the 16th Vermont Infantry. This was the first regiment he joined during the Civil War and fought in many battles,including the Second Battle of Bull Run, with this group of soldiers.
  • Seond Battle of Bull Run

    Charles Cummings fought in the Second Battle of Bull Run with the 12th Vermont Regiment and survived the battle with minor injuries that medics were capable of treating. However he did become sick and due to this he had to spend a good bit of time in recovery from his illness.
  • Pope's Retreat

    During the Second Battle of Bull Run Charles Cummings fought under Major General John Pope who, on the last day of battle, retreated into the dark woods surrounding the area giving General Lee and the Confederates the win.
  • 16th Vermont Regiment Officer

    After fighting with the 11th Vermont Regiment for his first months in battle, Charles Cummings is promoted to the head officer of the 16th Vermont Regiment and is shipped out yet again to the war.
  • 2nd Vermont Brigade

    While stationed in Washington with most of the Vermont Regiments very close together the regiments formed the 2nd Vermont Brigade. These soldiers moved somewhat together throughout the war and often fought together. This group of soldiers included Charles Cummings the LtCol of the 16th Vermont Infantry.
  • Camp Vermont

    The 2nd Vermont Brigade moved from Washington to Hunting Creek, Virginia where they established Camp Vermont. This was a major encampment for the Vermont Regiments and where they sheltered for a winter during the Civil War. One of the main regiments was the 16th Vermont Infantry which was led by LtCol Charles Cummings.

    In Fairfax County, Virginia the 16th Vermont and other Vermont Regiments along with groups from the Army of the Potomac the local Fairfax Chapel was turned into a very major field hospital after the Second Battle of Bull Run. It was used throughout mst of the rest of the war in the Eastern Campaign of the Civil War.

    The Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War and resulted in a Union win. It was the second attempt of General Lee to invade the North, but it was stopped by General Meade of the Union forces yet Meade was forced to retreat. However Lee did not invade after what is nown as Picketts Charge and gave the Union their goal of stopping the Confederates.
  • Meade's Retreat

    This event happened during the Battle of Gettysburg and was named after the Union's General Meade. It got it's name from when General Meade and his army fored the retreat of General Lee. He made the decision to not start a counterattack on Lee's forces. The other soldiers became angry and began to call his"weakness in battle" Meade's Retreat.
  • Second Battle at Rappahannock Station

    The Second Battle of Rappahannock Station was fought between General John Sedgwick's Union soldiers and General Jubal Early's Confederates which led to the capture of most of Early's soldiers and the defeat of General Lee's attack.This all sprouted from the pushing of the government on General Meade to make a move against Lee's army.

    During battle LtCol. Charles Cummings was injured by Confederate forces and could not get back up. He was unable to get away as the Confederate soldiers captured him and he was most likely taken as a prisoner of war. However the letter sent to his family filed him as killed in action.He was never recovered from a POW camp so LtCol. Charles Cummings was a casualty of the Civil War.
