  • Monroe Doctrine

    This was a united States policy that opposed European colonialism in the Americas. The document was articulated on December 2, 1823.
  • Construction of the Panama Canal

    This canal was built to reduce the distance that ships had to travel to pass between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, this also allows the commercial goods shippers to save time and money, which also means lower consumer prices.
  • Spanish-American War

    This war was fought through April of 1898 to August of 1898. This war was between Spain and the United States, which began after the explosion of USS Maine in the Havana Harbour; this led to the intervention of the U.S. in Cuba’s war for independence.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    This was an uprising against foreigners, which began in China in 1900. This rebellion was started by peasants but was eventually supported by the government. A secret society known as the boxers started a violent campaign to chase away all foreigners from China.
  • American Socialist Party

    This was a democratic socialist and social democratic political party in the U.S. that was formed by a merger.
  • Women's Trade Union League

    This was a U.S. organization composed of both working class and well-off women created in 1903. This organization's purpose was to fight for the efforts of women to organize labour unions and eliminate sweatshop conditions.
  • Aldrich-Vreeland Act

    This act was passed as a response to the Panic of 1907, which established the National Monetary Commission.
  • Underwood Tariff Act

    This act was passed by Congress in 1913 as a way to reduce levie on manufactured and semi-manufactured goods and to also eliminate duties on most raw materials.
  • Federal Reserve Act

    This act was signed into law by President Wilson on December 23, 1913. This law created the federal Reserve System, which became the central banking system of the United States.
  • Clayton Anti-Trust Act

    This act was a part of the united States antitrust laws as a way of furthering the goal of adding more substances to the U.S antitrust regime; this act tried to prevent the anticompetitive practices in their initiation.
  • Federal Farm Loan Act

    This act was effective on July 17, 1916 and tried to increase credit to rural family farmers; which ended up creating a federal farm loan board and twelve regional farm loan banks and lots of farm loan associations.
  • Jones Act

    This was a federal law that regulated maritime commerce in the United States; this required goods shipped between U.S. ports to be transported on ships that are built, owned, and operated by U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
