    John Cabot claims Newfoundland for the British Empire
    Cabot led the second European group to reach the shores of what is now Canada
    This was a good thing for Britain as it was a big step forward in their search for power. It gave them the upper hand against France for the time being.
    This was not a good thing for France because Britain got ahead in the race for power.
    It was bad for the natives because their land was being taken over, and there were lots of diseases that were being brought overseas.

    Jacques Cartier Claims St. Lawrence
    French explorer Jacques Cartier claimed the St. Lawrence region (now Quebec City) for the French Empire
    This was good for France because now they had land on a river that they could use strategically.
    Bad for Britain because France was getting more power.
    Good for the natives because they had a friendly relationship with the French

    Samuel de Champlain creates the colony which he calls "New France"
    Good for France because they had a new colony to settle
    Didn't really affect first nations or British

    Hudson's Bay Company granted charter
    Britain gives the trading company a charter to do business.
    Good for Britain because they had expanded their trading abilities.

    Good for Britain because they won.
    Bad for France because Britain had more power.

    Bad for natives because they still weren't treated fairly, even though the government said they would

    People from Britain started to move to Canada to find a better life away from overpopulated Europe
    This was good for Britain because they had more people coming to their colonies

    Canada officially becomes a Country, independent from Britain and no longer a colony
    Good for Britain because they had less responsibility over Canada,

    Louis Riel led the Metis against the government to keep their land for themselves
    Good for the Native/French (metis) because they were making progress in becoming treated fairly

    Signing of the numbered treaties
    Series of 11 treaties that were signed by the First Nations and the Canadian government to try and give back some of the land taken from them
    This was good for the First Nations because they were getting more rights

    An act that was an attempt to give First Nations more rights
    Just like the Numbered Treaties, this was good for the Natives because they got more recognition

    Schools were set up in order to try and assimilate the First Nations children. There was a lot of awful abuse that happened in these schools against the children
    This was a really bad thing for the First Nations because they were losing their culture and getting abused.

    Metis and Aboriginal people fought against the Canadian Government, as they were worried that their land wasn't going to be given back
    This was a step forward for Metis and Natives, so it was good

    A commission that was set in place to address some issues that had been seen in recent time.
    This was good for natives because the government was recognizing what had happened in the past

    The Gordon Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan closed in 1996
    This was great for everyone because there was no forced assimilation occurring anymore
  • Truth and Reconciliation Commission

    Truth and Reconciliation Commission
    A commission put in place to inform people about what happened with the residential schools
    This was good for everyone because we can learn from the mistakes made in the past
