cell history

  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

Anton van Leeuwenhoek described cells in a drop of pond water using a microscope. He also was the first person to give a detailed description of red blood cells, sperm, bacteria and protozoa.
  • Robert Hook

Rober Hook in 1663, discovered calls in cork which he examined under his microscope. Also he observed cells dividing under microscopes.
  • Jakob Schleiden

Thus, Schleiden became the first to formulate what was then an informal belief as a principle of biology equal in importance to the atomic theory of chemistry. He ... recognised the importance of the cell nucleus , discovered in 1831 by the Scottish botanist Robert Brown , and sensed its connection with cell division .
  • Theodor Schwann

discovered that animals were made up of cells.
  • Rudolph Carl Virchow

    Rudolph Carl Virchow
Rudolph Ludwig Karl Virchow- 1855 Virchow’s most widely known contribution was that he found new cells could be produced only from division of existing cells. Rudolph Virchow suggested that all cells come from pre-existing cells. He stated that all living things come from other living things.
  • Robert Brown

1773-1858 Scottish botanist Robert Brown revolutionized cell theory with his discovery of the nuclei in many different types of plant tissue. He observed one "nucleus" in each cell.
