    The Middle Ages

    The term used to express the time period between the fall of Western Rome and the 1400s. This was the period before the Renaissance and feudalism was common throughout Europe.

    Beowulf
    Beowulf is probably the oldest Old English epic poem. Epic poem about centered around a warrior who has superhuman power and strength and provides glimpse on what it means to be a hero. Written between the 7th to early 11th century.

    Berlingheiro

    Real name is unknown but "Berlingheiro" is denoted from the phrase he used to sign his art. He lived in 12th and 13th century. He had deep Byzantine influence. All dates are tentative.

    This was the Modanna and Child painted by Berlingheiro. This paints a contemplative scene of Mary with baby Jesus. Mary with a gesture pointing to Jesus, her son as the way to salvation.

    He was one of the most significant Northern Europe painting during this time. He worked in Burges.

    Painted by van Eyck. This portrait is of a rich Italian merchant. It is balanced picture and with elements of fertility hinted throughout the picture, though the wife may not actually be pregnant.

    Europeans began to start exploring for new trade routes and expand their empires. A period characterized with expansion and new technologies.

    Leonardo da Vinci

    Was a Reniassance painter. He was a great example of a "Renaissance man", does a lot of things and is good at it. He was an all admired great artist and scientist.

    Dürer

    Was a versatile German artist in the Renaissance. He was a key example of Protestant art. He was a painter, print maker, theorist, and mathematician from Numberg.

    Michelangelo

    Michelangelo a renoun sculptor and painter. He made many famous works of art. He was influenced by humanism but later changed his focus in his art. He still is a strong influence on Western art.

    The Pieta
    A scultpting of Michelangelo. It protrays a scene of Mary holding Jesus after he is taken down from the Cross. This is supposed to express a message of comtemplation to the viewer about the sacrafice made on the Cross. It was commisioned in 1498.

    One of the best known art pieces in the world. This artwork created by da Vinci displays his masterful use of proportions enshrined in mystery. Medium: oil

    Saint Jerome in His Study

    Saint Jerome in His Study
    Created by Dürer. This is a scene of Saint Jerome who transcribed the Bible into the Latin Vulgate and is an exemplified Christian scholar. Dürer is careful to include depictions of harmony and repose.

    This is one of the most celebrated painters in the world. He always had an interest of art and trained under an apprenticeship. He was a Protestant painter and painted many religious scenes and portraits often putting himself in them.

  • Paradise Lost by Milton

    Paradise Lost by Milton
    Paradise Lost is a super fiction of Genesis. It displays deep theological themes about the Fall of man. It was begun in 1658 when Milton was blind.

    The Pilgrims Progress
    A Christian allegory describing the Pilgrim's (Christian) journey through life to the "Celestial City". He is travelling along a road passing different acts and trials along his way. Is the most famous Chrisitan allegory and one of the most read book (second only to the Bible.)

  • The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defore

    Crusoe was the only survivor washed upon a uninhabited island. Provides themes of a depth of comtemplation and how a man changes when stranded by himself for decades.

    This was one of the first use of satire in literature to make a point. This was written by Johnathan Swift because of his frustration in getting people in paying attention to the issues facing Ireland.
