During the 1930s, Germany began to defy many areas of the Treaty of Versailles. Britain and France however, were almost forced to tolerate this open defiance- they could not afford to fight a war, and wanted to ensure peace. However, this period of Appeasement failed, when Hitler invaded Poland in March 1939.
