Causes of the Civil War Timeline Project

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
A line was established at 36 30 on the map. Anything above 36 30 was free and anything below 36 30 was slave. This was a temporary solution produced by Henry Clay to hold the problem of slavery off longer and longer. This is just a wound that the US choose to ignore and let alone to fester.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
The Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished. California entered the Union as a free state and a territorial government was created in Utah. This upset the balance and made people tence and very aware of others opinions on slavery. This made slave owners scared because of the new free state and people got upset.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
The basics of what happened was that everyone decided that Kansas and Nebraska where going to become slave or free states depending on popular sovereignty(democratic vote). This resulted in a bunch of people getting packed into two states to vote for the next free or slave state. This packing in resulted in a bunch of people with strong believes killing each other because they wanted the other side to have less votes. This was a big step in the civil war direction.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was a slave in free territory in the North. He was confused why he was still a slave but in the free states. This man said wait a minute, I am going to sew for my freedom! He got all the way to the highest court, the supreme court and the court said no! What they also did was make a law that any slave that has run away from their owner has to be returned to their owner if found. This caused many abolitionists to get very mad and only seemed to thin the ice that is close to breaking.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
This election was for who was going to be the next president for the US. Abraham Lincoln got the most votes and became the next president of America. Previously expressing his feelings about slavery, Abraham was most likely going to try to get rid of slavery. This scared the South into pulling the last straw that ended up in the recession of the South from the North into there own country called the confederacy. These countries disagree and they want to become whole agian, war time.
