  • Northwest Ordinance

    Northwest Ordinance
    The Northwest Ordinance was a law that gave congress the right to split the Northwest territory into five smaller territories and created a way to governor them. This caused tension between the North and the South because slavery was not allowed in the North.
  • The Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad
    This was one of the causes of the Civil War because slaves from the South were escaping to the free states in the North through this underground railroad and the South was upset and wanted the North to send back their escape slaves.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise, written by Henry Clay, allowed Missouri to become a slave state. The caused the Civil War because it caused disagreements between the North and the South with the issue of slavery states and free states.
  • Annexation Of Texas

    Annexation Of Texas
    The Annexation of Texas was passed by congress and allowed Texas to become part of the United States. This led to the Mexican War and the Civil War because of the issue of slavery in the areas taken from Mexico.

    Because of Manifest Destiny, the U.S had taken Texas from Mexico which caused the Mexican-American War. After the war the U.S now had California which gold was founded in. This lead to the Civil war because the issue of weather or not California would be a free state or slavery state was a big issue.

    The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was a peace treaty between the United States and Mexico that ended the Mexican-American War. In the terms of the treaty, upper California and New Mexico was now part of the U.S for $15 million. This lead to the Civil War because it lead to the issue of weather or not those states will be free states or slave states.

    The Compromise of 1850 started when California became part of the United States and the debate started on weather or not it would become a slave or free state. This lead to other issues between the North and the South and they came up with an agreement which was sighed by President Fillmore. This caused the Civil war because it caused the debate of slavery states and free states.

    Because of the Underground Railroad, slaves from the South were escaping and going to the North. The Fugitive Slave Act said that all escaped slaves were to be sent back to there slave owners. This caused the Civil war because it caused tension between the North and the South.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a novel about anti-slavery and was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This caused the Civil war because it called tension between the North and the South on the issue of slavery.

    The Caning of Sumner was when Preston Brooks attacked Charles Sumner an abolitionist for giving a speech when he criticized slaveholders. This broke down Sumner and drew a response from the American public on the expansion of slavery. This eventually led to the Civil War.

    Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent confrontations involving conflicts between anti-slavery and pro-slavery, which lead to the Kansas Nebraska Act which was an law that divided the territory west of the states of Missouri and the territory of Minnesota into Kansas and Nebraska. This caused the Civil war because it brought up the debate if Kansas would be slave or free.
  • Lecompton Constitution

    Lecompton Constitution
    The Lecompton Constitution supported the existence of slavery and protected rights of slaveholders. It also provided voters to choice of allowing more slave territory. This allowed Kansas to be a slave state and this caused problems between the north and the south which lead to the Civil War.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown was an abolitionist and wanted slavery to end once and for all. He came up with a plan to end slavery in the South. He would first take over weapons to the Harper's Ferry so he could arm slaves and they could begin a war. This became an impossible problem between the North and the South which soon lead to the Civil War.
