    The North had Industry and the south had agriculture. The north had a large number of factories and businesses and factories, and widespread use of manufacturing. The north based its economy on manufactured goods. The south had an agricultural economy, cultivating crops and raising livestock. they based their economy on growing and harvesting crops, including cotton.

  • The Missouri Compromise

    Missouri wanted to be a slave state but was above the dividing line between the north and the south. It admitted Missouri into the union as a slave state and Main as a free state, maintaining the balance.

    It is called the tariff of abomination. It was passed by Congress to Protect the American industry by applying high Teriff's on imported goods. 38% tax on some of the imported goods and 45% on some of the imported materials.

  • Bleeding Kansas

    There were violent fights all over whether or not slavery should be allowed in Kansas. John Brown led a bunch of anti-slavery fights in Kansas before the raid on Harpers Ferry.

  • dred scott decision

    Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. His owner had taken him to the north, soon later his owner had died. Slave hunters came and took Dred Scott but he sued them and the case went all the way to the supreme court. The court was split 50/50 and the Cheif justice Robert Tanny was the deciding factor. He stated that "no slave nor descendent of a slave could be a U.S citizen." Wich made the Missouri compromise and other legislation limiting slavery unconstitutional.

  • Lincoln- Douglas Debate

    This debate made lincoln a prominent national figure and conformed to his republican party an anti-slavery platform. His opponent Stephen Douglas was the main sponsor of the Kansas - Nebraska act.
