  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise made it so that every state that was above the 36' 30'' line was a free state and every state below the line was a slave state including Missouri, Kentucky and Virginia.

    This movement was used to help with the Emancipation of the Slaves. That means that it was to help the slaves get free so then they wouldn't have to be slaves again.

    This made it so that when the United States expanded it territory slavery was not brought into the new states.

    The free soil party was a group of people that disscussed the issue of slavery in the United States. They selected Martin Van Buren as their presidential candidate.

    Compromise of 1850
    This compromise made California a free state. The area between Utah and New Mexico was taken to a vote with popular sovereigntry. Also the compromise ended the slave trade that was happening in Washignton D.C.

    The Fugitive Slave Law made it so that runaway slaves must be taken back to their owners. If people did not listen to this law they could face fines for not returnig the slave and letting them go free.

    This was a book that was wriiten by Harriet Breecher Stowe. The book was about the nasty truth of slavery. Like how a slave was whipped to death by their owner.

    This act repealed the Missouri Compromise and divided the states. It also decided which states would have slavery by voting with popular sovereignty.

    John Brown and four of his sons decieded to take the law into their own hands by going to a small town named Pottowatoni Creek and taking five pro-slavery men out of their homes and murdering them.

    Dred Scott was a slave whose owner died so he tried to file a law suit which would make him a free person but it wasn't passed because the government said that he was still property and therefore couldn't be a free person.

    Lincoln thought that slavery should not continue to spread thoughout the states and that it should be ended so that everyone is free. Douglas thought that the fate of slavery should be put to the peoples vote of popular sovereignty.

    Raid on Harper's Ferry
    The raid on Harper's ferry was led by abolitionist John Brown. He and his group planned to raid the arsenal and start a slave revolt. He and his group were caught and were charged with murder and treason which led to him being hung for his crimes.

    Eleven of the southern states didn't like the fact that Abraham Lincoln was voted as president so they all decided to succede and become the Confererate States of America.

    In this election the states were all divided. The southern states strongly disliked Lincoln so they voted for Douglas. The outcome of the election was not to their benefit because Lincoln became president and he was the one person that wanted to stop slavery all together.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    President Lincoln had hoped that the Southern states would come back into the United States but they didn't so Lincoln sent troops down to Fort Sumter. This was one of the last major events that triggered the Civil War.
