Causes of the American Revolution

  • Navigation Acts

    Colonies could only trade with English or other colonies ships.
  • End of French and Indian War

    End of French and Indian War
    France ceded French Louisiana west of the Mississippi River to its ally Spain in compensation for Spain's loss to Britain of Florida (which Spain had ceded to Britain in exchange for the return of Havana, Cuba). France's colonial presence north of the Caribbean was reduced to the islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, confirming Britain's position as the dominant colonial power in the eastern half of North America. The colonies were required to pay taxes to pay off the war debt for Great Britain

    • tax on imported tea, glass, paper and other goods.
  • Boston Massacre

    • deadly riot which resulted in five colonists being killed by British soldiers.
  • Tea Act/Boston Tea Party

    • made a monopoly over tea; only sold by British East India Company
    • Sons of Liberty illegally boarded British ships and dumped the tea into Boston Harbor.
  • Coercive (Intolerable) Acts

    • effort to get colonists to pay for the tea and keep them from planning other attacks
    • closed the port of Boston which stopped trade, did not allow town metings, gave Britain control of the colony.
