  • Part One of the Novel (Analysis)

    Inciting Force - Stradlater is dating Holden's crush, Jean.
    Rising action - Stradlater is a playboy and doesn't care about women.
    Crisis - Holden wants to know what Stradlater and Jean have done on their first date. However, he doesn't get the answer he wants, so he decides to beat Stradlater up in order to make him leave Jean alone.
    Climax: Holden and Stradlater get into a fight
    Falling action: Stradlater wins and leaves the room angrily.
    Denouement: Holden wants to leave the school

    Main story - Holden Caulfield gets expelled from Pencey Shcool. On the night he returns his dorm, he gets into a fight with his roommate, Stradlater, because Stradlater is a playboy who's dating Holden's crash, Jean. Then, he decides that he doesn't need to hang around his school anymore. So, he heads to New York City and waits for his parents to call him back.

    Mood: Depressed --> chaotic --> disillusioned
    Main Story: Holden feels alone after leaving Pency. He tries to get company - From out-of-town girls and taxi drivers - and fails. He tries to sleep with a prostitute but finds that he gets "robbed". Then he goes on a date with his girlfriend, Sally, but he keeps talking about how he dreams about being a catcher in the rye and stop people from falling off the cliff, so his girlfriend gets mad.

    Rising action - Holden finds that everyone is hypocritical and untruthful.
    Crisis - He decides to be a "Catcher in the Rye" and stops people from fall off the cliff.

    Falling action - Holden loses all he's hope and thinks no one could help him because they are all really "insincere".
    Denouement - Holden decides to visit his little sister, Pheobe.

    Climax - Phoebe wants to leave with Holden.
    Falling action - Holden bails on his plan because he doesn't want to ruin Phoebe's future.
    Denouement - Holden decides to go back to school again and try to make himself a good future.

    Main Story: Holden sneaks into his apartment to visit his sister, Phoebe and tells her that he's going to leave to a really far place. Holden buys the record for his sitere but he breaks it on the street, but he gives her the record fragments. When Phoebe decides to leave with Holden, Holden bails on his plan. He doesn't want to ruin Phoebe's innocence ike he does to his. At last, Holden decides to go back to school again.

    Crisis: He fails but he keeps trying and thinks that there should be at least someone who wants to talk with him honestly.
    Climax: He finally finds out that everyone he talks to is untruthful and insincere.
