Holden is expelled
Holden is expelled from Pencey Prep school for failing all five of his classes except English, mostly due to lack of interest in any of them. He visits his History teacher, Mr. Spencer, one last time, and gets into a fight with his roomate Stradlater over him dating a girl Holden had feelings for. He decides to leave three days early for Manhatten, and not tell his parents about the expulsion. -
Holden checks in to Edmont Hotel
After annoying his taxi driver, Holden checks into a room at Edmont Hotel while his parents find out about the expulsion. He spends the first night witnessing strange things in other people's windows, then calling a girl who he heard was stripper, who turns him down saying that she's tired. -
Sunny visits Holden's room
Holden hires a prostitute, Sunny, to visist his room. However he becomes to nervous to do anything, gives an exuse about recovering from a back injury, and then tells her to leave. She doubles the price, and when he refuses, he is punched and has the money taken by force by Maurice, the elevator operator. -
Holden goed for a walk and tries to find Phoebe
While waiting for his date with Sally, Holden goes on a walk through the town and decides to look for Phoebe, his little sister, in the park. He finds one of her friends, who tells him she went to the museum on a school trip, but she then remember that was the day before. Holden goes to the museum anyway for memory's sake. -
Holden and Sally see a play
Holden goes to see a play called "I Know My Love" with a girl named Sally, who he had dated before.At the end of the date however Holden goes somewhat crazy, and then suggests that he and Sally "run away together", when she says no, he argues with her, and then soon leaves. -
Holden goes drinking with Luce
Holden breifly goes to a bar with one of his old friends, Carl Luce. However, Luce soon leaves because of how immature Holden was acting. Holden then drunkenly calls Sally again, annoyining both her and her grandmother. -
Holden visists Phoebe
Holden sneaks into his parents apartment while they're out and wakes up Phoebe. She is happy to see him and they talk for a while, until she finds out that he got kicked out of school. She tells him that their dad is going to kill him, and he leaves. He comes back a little later when she's calmed down, and talks to her more, they dance for a bit, and he hides in her closet when their parents get home. She gives him her Christmas money and in exchange he gave her his hat. -
Holden visists Mr. Antolini's apartment
After calling him from his parents appartment, Holden goes to stay at the appartment of his old english teacher, Mr Antolini. After an uncomfotable discussion about Holden's failing, Holden falls asleep. He awakes to find Mr Antolini stroking his forehead, causing him to immediately leave thinking that he is making advances on him. -
Holden sees Phoebe again
Holden leaves a note for Phoebe in her school for her to meet him at the museum. When she arrives, she demands to go with him on his trip to the west. When he says the she can't, she gets upset. He offers to take her to the zoo instead. Once there, he watches her ride the carasol, nearly in tears from happiness. -
Holden gets sent to the mental hospital
It's not entirely certain how he ended up there, since Holden doesn't want to write about it. But Holden goes home, "gets sick", and is put in a mental hospital of some kind, which is where he then wrote the story.
