  • Canada and the United Nations

    Canada and the United Nations
Canada is one of the first 51 countries to be a part of the United Nations. The United Nations was formed to promote equality, keep peace, protect and defend human rights and encourage nations to get along and not start wars. They also try to improve the quality of life all around the world. This is tied to the protection of human rights because the UN is dedicated to keeping peace and defending human rights.

    Lester B. Peason Continued
This prize is given out for keeping the peace. I belive this ties into the protection of human rights because keeping peace is a better solution than starting a war. A lot of the fighters didn't come out unscathed and so humans should be not be fighting and should solve problems peacefully so they can live their life to the fullest without being handicapped or scared. Every human has the right to life.
  • Lester B. Pearson and the Suez Crisis

Lester B. Pearson and the Suez Crisis
An Egyptian President, Abdul Nasser, took control of the Suez Canal. The canal was a very important transportation route. Later, Isreal invades Egypt. France and Britain soon supported Isreal and began bombing Egypt as well. Canada's Lester B. Peason proposed an idea of sending a UN force that didn't include the British or French forces, a peacekeeping force. Eventually, the General Assembly agrees and sends the world's first peacekeeping forces. He later recieves a Nobel Peace Prize.
  • United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus

United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus
After a civil war between the Greek and the Turkish, peace-keepers were sent to Cyprus. A lot of money was spent on the war and in the end, Cyprus joined the European Union. This ties into the protection of human rights because peacekeepers should not be the ones keeping the peace, risking their lives for a diagreement. Countries should learn to problem solve peacefully. Humans have the right to life.
  • Canada Signs CEDAW

    Canada Signs CEDAW
CEDAW stands for Conventin on the Elimination of All Forms Discrimination Against Woman. This convention enhanced the equality between genders and woman's rights into play internationally. For a long time, women were being treated unfairly because they were considered the "weaker" sex and they can't do things men can do. This coontributes to the protection of human rights because as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 2 (video), "Don't Discriminate"
