    This war lasted 6 days and it established Israel as the dominant regional military power because Israel took over the Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula, and West Bank. The Muslim armies were severely defeated by Israel with the help of the U.S. and this contributed to bitterness from many Muslims because the U.S. helped the opposing side.

    Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan, Bin Laden became a sort of Rebel, not fighting but making connections to make his rebel alliance stronger. It showed Bin Laden and his associates that it was possible to put pan-Islamism into practice.

    Bin Laden blames the U.S. for supporting Israel and the Jewish religion there instead of Muslims. There is much violence in Israel because of the conflicting religious beliefs and various views on the situation already and the U.S. helped Israel invade Lebanon which affected many Muslims.

    Bin Laden created a new group, called al-Qaida (“the base”) that would focus on symbolic acts of terrorism instead of military campaigns. After the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, bin Laden returned to Saudi Arabia to step up fundraising for this new and more complicated mission. This directly connects to 9/11 because the suicide pilots were financed by the group.

    Following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, U.S. troops arrive in Saudi Arabia in order to have a close base to eventually go after Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's troops. Bin Laden becomes outraged at the U.S. forces' presence near the Muslim holy sites of Mecca and Medina.

The 1993 World Trade Center bombing was a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, carried out on February 26, 1993, when a truck bomb detonated below the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Group of islamic extremists were later convicted.
  • Bomb goes off in Riyadh

    The U.S. ambassador in Saudi Arabia has confirmed it was a bomb that destroyed a military building in Riyadh on Monday. Six people were killed, including five Americans. Sixty others were injured. A group called The Islamic Movement for Change has claimed responsibility.
  • Al Qaeda Receives Financial Support

    The Saudi Arabian government starts financially supporting Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda and other extremist groups. This gives Al-Qaeda the support and supplies needed to plan an attack such as 9/11 on the U.S.
  • Talaban takes over Kabul

    Taliban completes takeover of Kabul, Afghanistan (he is suspected of giving refuge to Bin Laden). The capital of Afghanistan has fallen to opposition militia after three days of fierce fighting. Taliban forces consolidated their grip on Kabul after storming the presidential palace - the country's seat of government.
  • Terrorist Attack on USS Cole

    On October 12, 2000 a small boat that was loaded with explosives ran into the USS Cole and blew up. Seventeen people were killed and over 30 people wounded. This attack was carried out by two members of the Al-Qaeda. The USS Cole was refueling at the time of the attack to rejoin other ships to enforce trade sanctions against Iraq.
