Wind has been used in many ways in history. In ancient Egypt, people were able to use wind to push boats across the Nile River, historians saying at early as 5000 BC. -
In the century 200 BC wind was being utilised in Persia and the Middle East to power simple windmills to grind grains, and in China were used to power a simple water pump tool. -
The first recorded wind turbine to generate usable electricity was created and built in Scotland. In creator, professor James Blyth backyard, he was able to create a wind turbine which was able to generate enough electricity to power his cottage. The sails on the wind turbine were made using cloth sails and thus this made this the first house ever to have wind powered electricity. -
The first recorded US wind turbine was invented to generate electricity by inventor Charles Brush. The electricity created by this wind mill was used to create energy for Charles' mansion in Ohio. -
“This research and development program pioneered many of the multi-megawatt turbine technologies in use today, including: steel tube towers, variable-speed generators, composite blade materials, partial-span pitch control, as well as aerodynamic, structural, and acoustic engineering design capabilities. The large wind turbines developed under this effort set several world records for diameter and power output.” - said NASA.
