Medieval bridge builders borrowed the form of the stable Roman arch bridge, but began to build upward, layering on dwellings and places of business. Florence’s Ponte Vecchio (“Old Bridge”) is one of the most famous inhabited bridges, known both for its stunning setting and for the fact that it is still in use. Spanning the narrowest point of the Arno, the Ponte Vecchio sustained significant damage in the great Florence flood of 1966.
