Berlin
Bruno came home one day to find one of the maids at his house packing all his clothes. He is confused, wondering what she was doing. -
New house
Bruno was told that they were moving to somewhere called "out-with." But it was really called "Auschwitz" The move was for Brunos fathers job. The new house was nothing like his old one, he had no friends to hangoout with and he couldn't even go certain places because it was "out of bounds." -
Unpacking at new house
Bruno notices that the window in his new room is at a height where he doesn't have to stand on his tippy toes like he did at the other house. While he was looking out of the window he seen in a far distance a fence and a lot of people wearing striped pajamas. He questioned Maria, the maid, about it. -
Random guy
As Maria was putting away Bruno's clothes in the closet, Bruno was sitting on his bed. As he was sitting on his bed, a man who didn't look like his father walked out of his father room. Bruno had never seen this man before and the man gave Bruno a mean stare. It was Lieutenant Kotler. -
Bored Bruno
Bruno was bored out of his mind, he had no friends to play with and there was little room outside to play since everything was Out Of Bounds At All Times and No Exceptions. He wanted nothing to do with his sister since he considered her a "Helpless Case." So therefore, he couldn't even hangout with his sister either. -
Adventure around the house
Bruno decided to adventure around the parts of outside that he could, and he found a tree by Gretels window, his sister. He decided that he wanted to make a tire swing out of it, so he did. He ended up falling off the tire and hurting his knee. The person who helped him get the tire, Pavel, helped him wrap his knee up from bleeding. -
Kids get homeschooled
Father decides that the kids don't have to go to a school, and that they could be homeschooled. Bruno and Gretels teachers name is Herr List. They learned about the war and Bruno didn't really like the subject he had to focus just on. -
Bruno goes on an adventure
Even though Bruno was not allowed to go exploring, he did anyways. He walked to the fences where he found a dot that became a speck, a speck that became a blob, a blob that became a figure, and that figure became a person. This person was Shmuel. They found that they had the same birthday, and were born in the same year. -
Shmuel
Bruno and Shmuel plan to meet up every day at the fence. One day Bruno questions about everything and wonders why Shmuel is so skinny. Bruno then starts to bring Shmuel food every day, as much as he could without getting caught. -
Bruno finds Shmuel in the kitchen
One day when Bruno came out of his bedroom, he finds Shmuel in his kitchen. Bruno is shocked and doesn't know what to do or say. Shmuel tells him that he had to clean the cups since he had tiny fingers. Bruno trys to sneak Shmuel some food from the fridge, and right as Shmuel was chewing the chicken, Lieutenant Kotler walks in. -
Denial
Lietenant Kotler, who Bruno hates with a passion, yells at Shmuel and accuses him of stealing food from the fridge. Shmuel tells Kotler that him and Bruno are friends, and Bruno denys it saying that hes never even seen the boy before. -
Dinner
The family was having the Fury and his wife over for dinner. The family had certain rules to obey. They had to give a good impression, and if Bruno and Gretel didn't do as they were told, they would be in trouble. Brunos first impression of the wife was that she was very beautiful, and the Fury was a very rude, stuck up man. Bruno and his sister had to stand by the door and be very proper when the couple arrived, shaking their hand and being polite to them, then had to go to their bedrooms after -
Shmuel tells Bruno about his father
One day when Bruno and Shmuel met up, Shmuel told Bruno that he hasn't seen his father for a few days now and he is getting worried. Since Bruno didn't understand that it was a concentration camp, he didn't realize how serious it was. Shmuel wants Bruno to go under the fence and help him find his father. -
Mother is grossed out
Brunos mother finds lice in Brunos hair one day. She ends up shaving off all of Brunos hair. She wants to move back to Berlin, and the kids can go with her if they want. -
Father talks to kids
Since mother wants to go back to Berlin, father wanted to have a meeting with Gretel and Bruno and get their opinion if they wanted to go back or not. Gretel would love to because she misses her friends, and Bruno is not so sure because he doesn't want to leave Shmuel. -
Shmuel isnt showing up at the fence
Bruno walked every day down to the fences like he always would to meet up with Shmuel. Bruno felt bad and wanted to apoligize to Shmuel for lying to Lieutenant Kotler that him and Shmuel were'nt friends, but Shmuel wasn't showing up at the fence for the past couple of days, and Bruno was confused as to why. -
Shmuel finally shows up
Bruno didn't give up on trying to see Shmuel, so everyday he walked to the fence, even if Shmuel didn't show up. But eventually one day Shmuel was back in the spot he always was, and Bruno apoligized for lying, and Shmuel forgave him, even though Bruno didn't think he really did. Bruno told Shmuel that he might move, and Shmuel was depressd. -
The plan
Bruno and Shmuel decided to plan that on the day that Bruno leaves that Bruno will come under the fence, just for one time, and try to help Shmuel find his father. -
The day Bruno is getting ready to go back to Berlin
Like Bruno and Shmuel had promised eachother to meet, Shmuel brought an extra pair on striped pajamas, and since his hair was already buzzed off, he fit right in. Shmuel pulled the fence up and under Bruno went, and off they went to try to find Shmuels father. -
On the other side
As Bruno and Shmuel were looking for Shmuels father, they got stuck in a group of other people in striped pajamas that were going to the gas chambers, but they didn't know that. Well, Bruno didn't. He thought they would be alright..
