At 4:30 Stephen was walking across the street and got hit by a distracted driver. He suffered a collapsed right lung, multiple fractures of his right leg, scalp laceration and a broken hip. His leg bones were so shattered that doctors initially considered amputating his leg, but stabilized the bones in the leg with an external fixator. He resumed writing the book he was working on but only could sit 40 minutes at a time before the pain from his hip was unbearable. He was thinking of retiring.
