Birth of Bill Yoast
Bill Yoast was born in Florence, Alabama. -
Bill meets Mary
Bill went to work in the cotton fields when he was just a young boy and met a women named Mary who helped him survive those long hot days. He learned about hard work, respect, responsibility, and kindness. -
Bill breaks a barrier
One day in the fields Bill forgot his water and when the bucket with a dipper in it came around to him he drank out of it. This was supposed to be only for the "blacks" and when he drank out of that the others just saw him as a normal human. -
Bill meets Tefteller
Raymond Tefteller taught Yoast how to cheat and lie. One day they went to a pond and Raymond began to throw rocks at a black farmer who came to the pond to get water for his cow. Then Yoast went back a couple of days later and sat with the farmer quietly. -
Yoast makes the cut
Bill's sophomore year at Coffee High School had made him realize that books and sports were his way out. He made the cut for the football team. -
Gets recruited by Uncle Sam
He was drafted into the Army Air Corps. He didn't make the cut, but then was assigned to a unit called Air Commandos. Then he was going to go to fight, but then got reassigned to the second group. -
Breaks Records
He entered into a fitness contest while he was waiting to hear back for his new assignment. He broke the army record of sit-ups and did 1700. A commanding officer witnessed his efforts and told him to become a physical training instucter so he was shipped to Georgia. -
College
Goes to Mercer University and meet s Ed Sanders who helps him work hard and stay focused on finishing school. They ran track and played baseball together. -
First Job
He gets his first teaching and coaching job in Spart, Georgia. -
Raising a Child
Bill had to raise a child by himself because his wife had died during child birth. Her name was Bonnie Jean and the parents of his wife tried to take her away but he fought them. -
New Life
He and his third wife moved to Alexandria, Virginia with their new child Angela. He had gotten a job with Hammond High School. And shortly after his wife, Betty, had Sheryl. -
Marital Problems
After he had success with his last couple of seasons he was bombarded with football and Betty got tired of it. He begged her to give him one more chance and she did. He realized that he needed to balance the time he spent with football with the time he spent with his family. -
Becomes Assistant Coach
Bill is replaced by Herman Boone when the two schools became integrated. He then became assistant coach and learned a lot from Boone. -
The Titans
This is the season that everyone remembers. Boone and Yoast have to work together to have the team overcome their differences and play as a unit. This is the season that Yoast is always asked about. -
Meet Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell
These two were a big part the this season and they were affected by their coaches as their coaches were affected by them. Bill said he will never forget the player and person that Gerry was. -
Relocating
Bill made the tough decision to leave the Titan program and go help his fried start up a new program.
