He had danced professionally by joining a traveling group and then later that year danced as a Vaudeville Act. His successful career began when he was a nightclub and musical comedy performer. He performed almost only to african american audiences.

Forkins wanted Robinson to choreograph solo tap dances at nightclubs. Robison took a break from tap dancing and served as a rifleman in the World War 1. He became a drum major and led the regimental band.
