Between a Rock and a Hard Place
Born on 1975, Aaron Ralston moved from Indiana to Colorado and was afraid of of the rocky mountains and the thrashing snow. His life was full of adventure, a bear stalked him around Grand Teton National Park, almost drownded in the Grand Canyon, and he was trapped in a mountain storm. Once he arrives on his hiking adventure, in the Blue John Canyon in the Utah desert.

His weekend began climbing a Peak in Colrado and then traveling out to Utah, where he bagan his treacherous journey in Blue John Canyon. He "thought" he was going to be back by night fall,so he only packed himself 2 cookies and 2 granola bars with a canteene full of water. He begins his hike and already notices that the trail is very confusing and difficult.

On is hike he says he finds two middle age women that are attractive and kikes with them for a little while. Once they reach the point where they want to split up to each other, they talk about how they should meet up that night. He destroys through the cookies and keeps trecking on through his destination.

Ralston is an seasoned climber and usally has little or no trouble climbing rock faces and climbing huge 14ers. As he was crossing a steep rockface, he stumbled down apon a huge rock. What he thought was a steerdy rock, (800 pounds) suddenly feel down with him pinning his arm against the rock and the side rockface.

Aron remembers the other times he has been in trouble and this is no surprise to him. Back to when he was drownding the thr Grand Canyon while his friend is frantically tossing rope for him to grab on to. He starts lashing out for help, HELP! HELP! His adrenlaline, starts to where off and comes back into reality.

The the morning starts to heat up, and he starts to stop hammering the rock just to stay warm. He starts to think about all of the bad things that could/can go wrong and keeps running them throughout his mind. It's 3:05 Sunday, 24 hours after the intial hit from the whopping 800 pund boulder. He is very thirsty, but dosent want to waste all of his lifelines.

Just when you think it can't get any worse, a massive sand storm hits. He shifts his body away from it but is still gruling on his body. Even though it is a sand storm, it doesn't last that long, and wouldn't you know it he starts talking about more of his wild adventures to Sawatch Range. Also, he dosen't want to loose his valuble lifelines such as his water, tools, and his lacking supply of food.

As the night errupts, he closes his eyes and makes a wish to get out alive and well. Aron takes a sip of water, but can't stop himself because of the esculating thirst while his conscience kicks him and forces him to stop.He imagines himself at home with the grape fruits sitting on his dining room table and the women he was suppose to meet that night. Aron was suppose to have a good time, but now this happens and changes his life forever. Great timing he thinks to himself.

Aron is talking about his trip through the winter of 2003, climbing 14,000 foot mountains. His awareness towards avalaches grows and his confidence with them too grows better. He was caught with a whitout and had to cut out a snow cave just to keep warm and get away from the horrible conditions. Aron and his team along with others stayed it out while 40% of the other teams withdrawled. His team finishes 16th in the standings, while the other teams finished 9 hours before them.

He is out of food and water while the sun is setting over his head. It has been 50 hours since he was stuck between rock and wall and has a song from Austin powers stuck in his mind. He can neither stay away nor stay fully awake, but occasionally dozes off. When night fall hits he starts to think if he should drink his own urine. Also, mosquitos start to bug him so he figures that there's water nearby, if he were to get out alive.

Aron's thirst starts to rise along with his hunger. He checks his map and notices that there is a pool of water just below the canyon if he were to get out alive. He explains what happened with the two women he encountered at the begin of his treck. The two of them start to go looking for him while coming across his car and leave their email addresses incase they dont see him the next day.

It is now day five since the initial impact. Aron starts hallucinating feeling like he is riding on a roller coaster and seeing visions of his friends crossing the canyon. He is now starting severe cases of dehydration and is feeling really, really bad. He drinks his urine that he set out the night before, but nearly pukes it up because of the horrific smell and taste. He visions of drinking lemonade and chocolate shakes while time is moving very slow.

After Aron dosent show up to work for the second straight day, his boss calls his mom to infrom her to what is happening. She checks his e-mails and figures out that he has not used it since he started his hike. She calls the police to inform them about a missing person, also calling Aron's friend. They call to the park service to see who he might be hiking with, but they cannot give out any information involving that.

It is now day 6, Thursday, May 1st, 2003. He is surprised to be alive, but keeps going strong. He says he wants to die listening to music, but the tapes don't work because they were damged during the fall. He pulls out his video camera and tells his sister that he wants her to play the piano at his funeral. Donna gets all police searching through his records and what he has done the past couple of days. They figured out his last perchase was made 7 days ago in the city market.

It's now 11;34 May 1, and Aron is setting his knife up ontop of the rock. He thinks the himself that if he is going to get out of the canyon he is going have to amputate his right arm and hike his way out. Two days pass by and now he makes his move by cutting right below his elbow with blood gushing down all over the place. Aron rapples himself 60 feet over the overhang and hikes 5 miles out of the canyon before a helicopter spots him.

Before his dad arrived in Grand Junction, his story was already across the globe. He lost 40 pounds along with a liter and a half blood. It took 3 serguries and five days to get him into "living condition" state, but somehow came out of it alive. Aron's story was unbelivable and inspired many other hikers across the country. Even though he is missing his right arm, Aron continues to do what he loves while hiking the country with his friends and family.
