Benjamin Franklin Chavis Jr. was born in 1948 in Oxford, North Carolina, then into long and distinguished line of preachers. His parents were Benjamin Chavis Sr. and Elisabeth Chavis. He grew up the only boy in a family of four children.

He graduated from Mary Potter High School in 1965.

received his B.S. degree in chemistry in 1969 from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

In 1980, He received his master's of divinity from Duke University and went on to earn his doctorate of ministry from Howard University.
