Nic Sheff is Born
Nic's birth was the day David changed as a man forever. He was now responsible for someone other than himself. He was undertaking the job of parenting and the starting the interesting journey of parenthood. He had one goal in mind and it was to raise his child to grow up and be happier and successful then he was. -
Vicki and David Divorce
The divorce hit the entire family hard especially David. He was stressed and depressed. He didn't like the way the divorce affected Nic and blamed himself for the pain his son was going through. After Vicki moved to LA and the two shared joint custody, David had Nic every day except holidays and summers. This gave David a big responsibility to make sure his son was raised in a happy, safe environment and that he was set up to do his best. -
David and Karen get Married
When David and Karen get married this is a big part of David and Nic's life David has a soul mate, friend and companion. Karen is also helps in raising Nic and is a mother figure. -
Nic's First Encounter With Drugs
While picking up Nic from school one day David smells cigarette smoke. Since, Nic is David's first kid he is unsure how to handle this situation and what the consequences should be. He feels a stern talking to should send him the message and since it's "only" cigarettes nothing serious should come of it. -
David Discovers Nic's Marijuanna
While packing an overnight bag for Nic, David discovers a small bag of marijuana. This comes as a shock to him he thought the message about no drugs was made clear to Nic. David punishes Nic and his persistent with his lectures on the dangers of drugs and the negative affect they have on you. After a two week punishment and many conversations on drugs and months without any signs of any drugs David assumes he won’t be in this situation again. -
Trouble at School
For the second time Nic has been caught with marijuana, this time at school. He is caught purchasing drugs and is suspended. the school he was attending had a second chance policy for people purchasing drugs. This policy reflects the possibility of many drug users at the arts school Nic attends. David begins to worry that this drug issue may become a reoccurring issue and decides that therapy is necessary. He believes that marijuana is a gate-way drug and is the first step to more intense drugs. -
Nic's Trip to Paris
Upon Nic's return from his school tip to Paris he comes back different. He looks exhuasted and disheveled with black rings around his eyes. He complains of hi somach hurting claiming it's an ulcer. At first David believes him but his gut feeling tells him that something isn't right. The Nic David sent to Paris isn't the same one that came back. However, instead if questioning Nic he believes the story and ignores his assumption. -
Nic Gets Arrested
After a failure to appear in court for a charge of possession of marijuana Nic's arrested. This is a rude awakening to David and expresses how bad Nic's drug problem has gotten. He begins to blame himself again for Nic's mistakes and feels he was too lenient and forgiving with his punishments. -
Where's Nic?
Nic goes missing for a night. David is scared and nervous not knowing where his son is. After a day of waiting he gets a call from Nic asking for help. Once again David is off to help Nic. After helping him get back home he demands he got to rehab. Nic replies with the usual I’m fine and how he'll never do meth again. METH?! This is the worst thing he’s hear come out of his son’s mouth. Meth the one drug David did once and never touched again and is the drug that took the life of his friend. -
First Rehab Attempt
After forcing Nic into the car David took him to a well-known detox center in Oakland. After she talked to Nic she made it very clear to David that the center wasn't up to par with the needs of Nic's illness. That he was far worse than all the other patients there and that he needed lots of help. This really worried David as his son’s condition was much worse than he thought it was. He didn't know where to go or how to find treatment for his beautiful boy. -
Nic Goes To College
After completing treatment and being detoxed for months Nic felt he was ready to move on and go to college. David backed this idea as he thought it would be the first step in Nic getting back to normal. Nic received lots of help and support from family, teachers and friends. This turned out to be a bad decision as he relapsed at party and continued to lie to his parents about him using again. -
Nic's Overdose
Nic's over dose was a big part of the story as it was the closest David has come to losing his son. After almost dyeing David figured his son would give rehab another try or at least give him a call. But that's not how it worked out after calling the hospital back the day after Nic checked in he had checked out he pulled the IV's and catheter himself. David could see how much drugs consumed his son's life and knew he needed to get help soon. -
Nic's 17 Month Sobriety Over.
After saying sober, going to AA meetings, working at a rehab facility, and having his good sponsor Rand Nic relapsed with his girlfriend Z at a party. David's heartbroken after having so much faith in his son's progress he can't bare that his son threw it all away. -
Cerebral Hemorrhage
David Sheff coming near death having a cerebral hemorrhage opened up his mind. He realized that he's not always going to be there to help and support his children. One day he will die and his kids will live on without him. This is when he realized Nic is going to have try to help himself. This hemorrhage helped him realize the truth about parenting and helped him let go a little bit. -
Nic's Last Rehab Attempt
With Nic in a hospital trying to detox it gives David a little sense of peace knowing his son is safe and working to his goal of defeating this illness of addiction.
