The Atlantic 10 Conference was first founded in 1975 as the Eastern Collegiate basketball league and began conference play in 1976.

After Villanova and Pittsburgh left the conference in 1980 and 1982, St.Bonaventure, Rhode Island, Saint Josephs, and Temple joined. There was now 10 members in the league instead of 8, so the conference adopted the Atlantic 10 name in 1982.

After the 2005-2006 season, all of the schools in the A-10 football conference left to join the new conference sponsored by the CAA.
