In 1926 Meighen could not form a ministry or he and his colleagues would be unable to sit until by-elections. They would certainly lose. He appointed a cabinet of “acting ministers” who also became known as “The Shadow Government” which he directed from a seat in the gallery pending his own confirmation at the polls.

After only four months as Prime Minister Arthur Meighen was once again defeated by Mackenzie King. King would later lead Canada throught the Great Depression.

This was a famous group of five women who fought to have the law changed. Under the law women were not considered persons under law until it was brought to the British Privy Court. There a new law was passed declaring women persons by law.

On this day there was a disasterous crash in the stock market. This sent millions of people into great distress. This was the main cause of the Great Depression. People lost their houses, jobs and savings.

R.B. Bennett was a leader and he appointed Meighen to the senate in 1932 and he was the government leader in that chamber.

In 1941 he was pulled from that position to lead the Conservatives. In 1942 he went for a seat in York South by election but he was defeated.

After his 1942 defeat Arthur Meighen resigned from politics and started a law career in Toronto.

After many years in politics and law Arthur Meighen died at age 86. He died on August 5th 1960 in Toronto Ontario.
