  • Watergate Scandal

    A wire tapping scandal involving Richard Nixon, which resulted in his resignation from office.
  • Gerald Ford becomes President

    Gerald Ford takes office after Richard Nixon's resignation, he was previously the vice president and as such he needed to fill in as president.
  • Proclamation 4311

    Richard Nixon may have resigned from office, but he was still liable for trial due to his offenses. Proclamation 4311 pardoned Nixon.
  • Helsinki Accords

    The goal was to protect human rights on a global scale and, in the process, had an effect on the Cold War and American-Russian relations at the time.
  • Jimmy Carter becomes President

    Jimmy Carter's was the first presidency after Nixon to involve voting, as Ford simply came as the Vice Presidency into the presidency.
  • Camp David Accords

    A formal peace treated initiated by Jimmy Carter to establish peace between Egypt and Israel.
  • Iran-Hostage Crisis Begins

    American hostages taken in Iran. Captors required weapons as ransom for the American hostages.
  • Reagan becomes President

    Reagan, a previous actor, becomes president the same day that the Iran-Hostage Crisis ends. Reagan introduced Reaganomics and increased military spending.
  • Iran-Hostage Crisis Ends

    The hostages were returned, though with failed attempts to secure the hostages that made the process very difficult and drawn out. Ended on the first day of Reagan precidency.
  • US involvement with Grenada/Latin America

    Reagan moved forces into a small island nation in order to stop the spread/influence of a small socialist speck that started to take hold in Grenada and Latin America. The encounter was brief with few casualties
  • SDI

    Also known as Star Wars, initiated by Ronald Reagan, in order to have a strong defense against, and to stop, the use of ballistic missiles. Mostly initiated as part of the war to stop Russia.
  • Boland Amendement

    List of legislative amendments constructed to limit AMerican activity in the Contras.
  • Iran-Contra Affair Begins

    A frowned upon move by many Americans, in which the government provided funds to the Nicaraguan contra rebels from the profits that they gained from selling weapons to Iran.
  • Iran-Contra Affair Ends

    As a result of the negative opinion on the affair, and the restrictions set up by the Boland Amendment, AMerica soon ended its affair with the contra rebels.
  • "Tear Down This Wall" Speech

    Reagan, standing next to the Berlin wall, speaks to Gobachev in hopes that he will tear down the Berlin wall. Reagan wanted peace, and assured Gorbachev that America would not rush in, and that the tearing down of the wall could establish a good relationship. This was a key moment in the ending of the cold war.
  • INF Treaty

    The first agreement with the intent to reduce the number of nuclear arms in any nation posession. One of the key factors in the end of the cold war was removing the weaponry that was pointed from one nation to the other.
  • Election of 1988

    The election of George H.W. Bush. Marked a massive Republican landslide for Bush's victory, a larger landslide than had been seen in years as many previous elections had been fairly close.
  • AFDC Expanded

    Provided Assistance to children without homes that was expanded upon in later years from its start in the 30's, but ended in 1996.
