Abolished discrimination against all people in military.
Helped many people of color serve the county. -
Truman’s desegregation of the military
This was part of Executive order 9981, this ended segregation in the military and helped many people serve the country. -
Brown v Board of Education
Court case about racial segregation in schools.
This was first step to equal rights because people of color finally had an equal opportunity for education. -
Emmett Till's Death
Emmet Till was lynched, this sparked a sense of anger in people of color motivating them to bring change through the CRM. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Boycott against racism on buses.
First boycott in the CRM. -
Civil Rights Act of 1957
First federal civil rights legislation.
Big first step in the civil rights movement. -
Little Rock 9
Group of African American students from Little Rock High School.
These were the first kids to go to school that was originally segregated. A huge step in the CRM. -
Greensboro NC Sit-in’s
Protest against segregated lunch counter.
One of many peaceful protest in the CRM. -
Freedom Riders
Civil rights activists who drove around in public buses in southern states for 7 months. Resulted in Court decision that ruled segregated public buses were unconstitutional. -
24 amendment
Ended poll tax.
The poll tax represented the Jim crow laws which were made to segregate blacks. -
Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”
This letter was a response to the white people who put him in jail because of his non violent protests.
This motivated many people because it showed the injustice of the country. -
March on Washington – “I have a Dream Speech”
The famous MLK Jr. speech that inspired people nationwide, motivating them to join the CRM. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Biggest law, prohibiting discrimination from all people of any origin, race, and religion. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Discrimanting during voting was made illegal.
Step in voting rights which was part of civil rights movement. -
March from Selma Alabama
Protest march from Selma to Montgomery.
They did this because of the discrimination during voting times.
This led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
