Dred Scott v. Sandford was a highly controversial case that intensified the national debate over slavery. The case involved a slave named Dred Scott who was taken froma slave state to a free teritory and filleda lawsuit saying that since he was in a free teritory he should be able to have his freedom but Chief Justice Roger Taney who rules blacks were not citizens and are unable to sue in federal court.
