Animals that have successfully gone to space (from their categories).

  • 1. Monkeys

                                  1. Monkeys
The first monkey astronaut that was sent successfully into space was a rhesus monkey, with the name of Albert II. Albert II was launched on June 14, 1949. He was launched about 134 km up in the air in a V-2 rocket. Unfortunately, their was something wrong with his parachute and so that led him to death. :(
  • 2. Mice

                                  2. Mice
The first mouse astronaut that was sent successfully into space name is unknown. He/she was launched on August 31st, 1950 in an American V-2 rocket. Before I continue, I don't think it would be the greatest idea to send a mouse in space because it is probably going to die. Let's continue, the sad thing is that the rocket was destroyed on its way back to Earth because of a parachute system fail for the mouse. After this experience, a lot of people tried to send mice into space.
  • 3. Dogs

                                 3. Dogs
The first dog astronaut that was sent successfully into space was named Laika. She was a stray dog wandering the streets of Moscow, until someone captured her and prepared her for a mission. Laika was launched on November 3rd, 1957. Did you know she was also the first animal ever sent to space? Some countries made stamps of her to honour her for her bravery. Unfortunately, recent info shows that she died from panicking, just a few hours after blast-off!
  • 4. Rabbits

                                 4. Rabbits
The first rabbit astronaut that was sent successfully into space was named Marfusha. She "made" a high altitude test flight on July 2, 1959. Marfusha was sent into space in the Soviet Sputnik five on August 19th, 1959.There was also another rabbit that was sent into space and he came back alive with his other animal astronauts, which were dogs and mice.
  • 5.Frogs

                                 5.Frogs
The first frog astronaut that was sent successfully into space, name is unknown. He/she was launched in March of 1961 in the Soviet Vostok 3A. With the frog, they also sent mice and guinea pigs. I am not sure if all the astronauts survived and came back to earth.
  • 6. Guinea Pigs

                                 6. Guinea Pigs
The first guinea pig astronaut that was sent successfully into space, name is unknown. He/she was launched on March 9th, 1961 in the Soviet Sputnik 9 (rocket). With the guinea pigs were dogs, mice and different types of reptiles. All of the astronauts survived and came back to earth.
  • 7. Cats

                                 7. Cats
The first cat astronaut that was sent successfully into space was named Felix. Felix was born in France. He was launched on October 18th, 1963 in a Véronique AGI Rocket. Surprisingly, he survived! Some people say that on the last minute, Felix ran away and so they got another cat called Felicette and sent her into space. Whatever cat they sent into space, France would still be awarded The First Cat in Space Award.
  • 8. Turtles

                                 8. Turtles
The first two turtle astronauts that were sent successfully into space names are unknown. He/she and he/she were launched on September 15th, 1968 in the Zond five spacecraft. There weren't any other animal astronauts on board. The two turtles survived and returned to earth on September 21st, 1968. Nothing happened to the turtles except that they both lost some weight. Did you know that the Soviet Soyuz "20 mission" kept turtles in space for 90 days setting a world record for animals in space?
  • 9. Fish

                                 9. Fish
The first fish astronaut that was sent successfully into space name is unknown. They send fish into space because they want to see if they have the ability to survive in extreme conditions. They launched him/her some time in 1973, but I am just going to write January 1st, 1973. On June 22, 1976 they launched two cosmonauts, two tortoises and a zebra fish.Did you know mummichogs were the first kind of fish to travel to space?

The first newt astronaut that was sent successfully into space name is also unknown. They launched him/her some time in 1985, but I am going to write January 1st, 1985. In 1985, the Bion "7 mission" carried 10 Iberian ribbed newts, with two rhesus monkeys and ten male rats.
