Andreas Vesalius was born in Brussels, Belgium.
-
Vesalius began his studies at the University of Louvain in Belgium.
-
Vesalius graduated with a doctorate after studying in Paris and Padua. As he graduated he was appointed Professor of Anatomy at the University Of Padua.
-
Using his own studies, observations and information, Vesalius taught his students using charts he created. He soon realised his charts were being copied so he published them and names them Tabulae anatomicae sex.
-
Up to this point in history, the people in the day followed the writings of a Greek Physician Galen. However Vesalius disproved many of Galens theories as they were all based on animal dissections.
-
Vesalius published the first actual textbook on the human anatomy: De Humanis Corporis Fabrica. 'Fabrica' contained detailed illustrations of the human anatomy that Vesalius illustrated himself.
-
Vesalius got permission from the local court to dissect corpses of criminals. He performed a dissection to learn more about the human body.
-
Vesalius married Anne Van Hamme.
-
Vesalius and Anne had one child, a daughter. They named her Anne.
