The Suzuki family dry-cleaning business was sold by the government in the beginning of World War Two and Suzuki, his mother, and his two sisters at the time were put into a camp in Slocan and his father into a camp in Solsqua. At the end of the war the Suzukis moved to Islington, Leamington, and London Ontario.

He got a B.A in Biology from 1958 from Amherst College in Massachusetts then a Phd in Zoology from the University of Chicago in 1961. He was then a professor in University of British Columbia genetics department from 1963 to 2001.
